Gameplay of Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire has great graphics and an immersive soundtrack, but there’s more than meets the eye about this game. The gameplay is surprisingly complex for a video game played exclusively in browser. A blend of economy and military strategy is required to survive in this competitive arena. Players start with a single city but the end goal is to build an Empire from scratch and this is done by conquest.

Players can’t have more than one account per server, which drastically limits the possibility of unfair or abusive conduct. Interactions with NPCs are simple and informative, laying the framework for future quests. It is governed by a set of rules that apply throughout the game, with complexity deriving from military endeavors. The game picks up speed pretty quickly, but the first couple of levels unfold and a snail’s pace.

The Goodgame Empire gameplay starts invariably with the building of the city, once players have enough resources. Grinding wood, stone and food is an action that will stay with the players throughout their gaming experience. As players build more advanced structures, they become more effective at collecting and storing resources. Everything costs, so a functional economy is essential for raising an army and recruiting heroes.

Money is another core resource in this game and it is acquired through taxation. This as well as overcrowding has a negative effect on the happiness of inhabitants. In order to restore their happiness levels, players need to build decorative structures and green spaces. The user-friendly and intuitive interface makes it easy for beginners to find their way around and tackle the sensitive issues.

Plot of Goodgame Empire

The plot of Goodgame Empire is quite simple and it’s almost identical to the one behind similar MMO browser games. Players start from scratch and initially try to survive in a hostile environment. Building a castle and fortifying it enough as to withstand waves of attacks is only the first step. The choice for one hero or the other is less relevant in the great scheme of things, but gives the story some weight.

The game quickly shifts from resource gathering and structure building to offensive plays. The first five levels emphasize the importance of having a lucrative economy and players should refrain from attacking their peers. Even though luck plays a role in the outcome of battles, taking on heroes of higher-level is a surefire way to lose your forces. There are quests that spice things up and keep players happy in the early stages of their single player campaign.

In addition to the main storyline, which is rather straightforward players can divert resources and forces to completing side quests. In return, those who are successful will receive money and experience, which enables heroes to level up. Goodgame Empire is a blend of strategy, building and war games and resources are needed for all of them. In addition to gathering them, players can collect more by unlocking various achievements. Another way to acquire resources is by spending real cash.

In the later stages, having access to a lot of resources can give players an advantage over the pack. At the same time, a high-level player with the right set of skills can be successful without spending cash. Players can pursue different objectives, but ultimately, the goal is to conquer the entire world. You have a snowflake’s chance in hell to do it by yourself.

Development of Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire was the first major browser game produced by the German studio. It drew inspiration from the games that were popular at that time and introduced similar features. Looking back, it offers the same type of entertainment as Clash of KingsClash of Lords or King’s Empire. The time spent in development was long enough to allow the producers to come up with a flawless game. There was no need for major patches to address bugs, yet some changes were made to the gameplay.

The monetization of this video game hasn’t changed since it was released back in 2009. It is still free to play and participants can acquire resources through the straightforward process of gathering. However, with many specialized tools costing rubies, some players choose to play real currency for them. This feature was available right from the start and only minor tweaks were made to balance things out.

As competition increased among games belonging to this genre, the developers have made some more changes. It all culminated with the release of the sequel, which goes by the name of Goodgame Empire Four Kingdoms. At its cornerstone are the same concepts, but it features slightly better graphics, the consequence of technology advancing.

Where can I download Goodgame Empire?

The obvious solution for those who want to download the game is to go straight to the official website. It can be acquired at or on the main page of the software developer. This is a good choice for those who want to broaden their horizon and explore the other games produced by the same company. Goodgame’s most popular games belong to the MMO, RPG or RTS genres, but they tackle other types as well. A shining example is Goodgame Poker.

What are others saying about Goodgame Empire?

Goodgame Empire was a pretty innovative game back in 2010 and still has plenty of fans. Those who played since day one have changed their views very little and are still hooked on the gameplay. Very few complain about the fact that this passion for the game has cost him a lot of money, since the investment was voluntary. Meanwhile, there are disgruntled players who feel that the game favors heavily real money players at the expense of those who enjoy it for free.

There are not many who would go as far as to say that it’s a waste of time or money, but many find the competition at high-level crushing. The ones who are willing to allocate real resources have an easier time and can afford to purchase troops and upgrades that are prohibitive for regular players. A few of the negative Goodgame Empire reviews also complain about the fact that the game still has bugs. This is not exactly a novelty, but they find it disturbing since so many players are paying.

Those who went all the way and expressed their concerns to customer support were generally happy with the response. Pretty much everyone agrees that the game is very addictive, but this is rather a quality than a defect. The developers did a fine job at blending in those elements that players appreciate so much. The popularity of the game didn’t plunge even after the sequel was released last year.

My rating of Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire was one of the best flash-based games of its time and he didn’t fall from grace six years later. It doesn’t break the mold and fits perfectly in the category of castle building, but its graphics have aged gracefully. There is more than meets the eye about this game though, with the gameplay being its main strength. The combination between free to play and addictiveness ensured its success and prompted developers to produce a successful sequel

Had I played the game back in the day, I would’ve probably been impressed by the gameplay as well as the graphics. As of today, this is rather an average game that doesn’t stand a chance against its sequel. However, the review score should reflect the overall quality of the game without ignoring its initial success. That’s why I’m willing to give it a review score of 9 out of 10, which is pretty high.
